As I have mentioned before, gardening is a skill that I haven't quite mastered. I truly admire the folks out there with beautiful flower beds, vegetable plots & rows of fruit trees. Those are things that I dream of having. I'm always told by avid gardeners that's its all so very easy. No. It is not easy. In fact it all seems rather complex! I don't know what the PH level of my soil is or even it's temperature for that matter. I do not know what its consistency is, let alone what types of soil I should add to it to make it more conducive to growing. (They have ailses and ailses of dirt at the garden store) I do not know how deep to dig the holes when I'm adding to my yard, and I have yet to plant a seed that actually grew even though I was told very clearly on the package that it would! I could go on and on here, but I won't. Instead I'll share one very small gardening triumph.
Prior to our owning this little cottage, several of the previous owners added a plant or two here and there, rather haphazardly, around the house. The other day, when tidying up the yard from our painting extravaganza, I noticed that there were several very nice looking plants amid an array of weeds. WOW! Real, full grown, flowering plants.....IN MY OWN YARD! I was excited you see because the hard part was already done for me. So I started a mini gardening project. I carefully dug each of them up and planted them in a neat little row along the ledge at the end of our yard. Then, with the help of my wonderful neighbor, I collected rocks to form a garden edge.
One side note: My husband likes to mow over things that are "in his way". So this rock edging should help prevent all my hard work from being decimated in one afternoon.
As you can see from the pictures, there is not much variety in my little garden, just a few tiger lilies & hostas and one unknown yellow plant. But to me its a wonderful garden. Why? Because the plants are actually growing.
Here are a few Rosa Rugosas that I dug up and split apart. I then planted them in a little row along the front of the cottage. They are small and scraggly now, but I'm hoping that in the years to come they will fill out and complement the cottage nicely.
Thanks for stopping by!
